Why government job resumes are different

Government recruitment in India — UPSC, SSC, state PSCs, PSU exams, banking — uses standardised application forms with mandatory fields private-sector resumes don't have: father's name, category, marks at every level, percentage in 10th and 12th, post applied for, exam roll number.

When the form allows attaching a resume or biodata, it must follow the same conventions: tabular qualifications, full personal details, formal Times-New-Roman / Arial typeface, no design flourishes.

Mandatory sections

Personal details (with father's name, DOB, category, nationality), permanent + correspondence address, post applied for + roll number, educational qualifications (10th onwards in tabular form with marks), work experience if any, additional certifications (typing tests, computer proficiency, language), references (often two named officials), and a signed + dated declaration.

Tier-2 and tier-3 government jobs sometimes ask for height, weight, identification mark, and blood group. Read the notification carefully; including extra info doesn't help, but missing required info disqualifies.

FAQ

Can I use the same resume for UPSC and a private-sector job?

No. UPSC and other government applications need a biodata-style document with personal details. Private sector wants a one-page achievement-focused resume.

Do I need to mention category (SC/ST/OBC)?

Yes — for any government application that has reservation, your category determines eligibility for relaxations. Skipping it costs you the relaxation.
